Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR)

The answer
No rail or rapid-bus link reaches DAR yet — open Bolt (or Uber) at arrivals: an app-priced car to the centre runs TZS 25,000–50,000, 25–90 min depending on traffic.
TAA publishes ranks but no fare table — the app quote is the only price you see before you get in.
To Zanzibar? Azam Marine ferry from the Sokoine Drive terminal: Economy US$35 non-resident / TZS 40,000 resident, ~2h to Stone Town.
Late landing? App cars thin after ~22:00 — pre-book a fixed transfer (≈US$25–40).

🚕 Every way out — real prices

Bolt / Uber app ride BEST FOR MOST
TZS 25,000–50,000 to the centre
Both apps work at DAR with upfront pricing; Bolt has the deeper pool. Pickup at the terminals' road edge; wait 5–20 min, longer at night or in rain. Msasani/Slipway (18 km) quotes about 40,000–70,000.
Green-ribbon official taxi rank
TZS 40,000–70,000 to the centre (negotiated)
TAA-certified taxis — white plates, green ribbon, TAA logo — queue at marked ranks outside T1/T2/T3, 24/7. No meters, no published tariff: agree the TZS price per car before loading bags; night quotes run higher.
Pre-booked fixed transfer
≈ US$25–40 to the centre
Hotel or broker transfers fix the price before you fly — the pick after ~22:00, when app cars thin.
Dala-dala minibus (budget)
TZS 400–650 per person
No bus serves the terminals — walk 7–9 min to Nyerere Road near the airport mosque, take a 'Mnazi Mmoja' bus toward Kariakoo, ~45–60 min. Crowded, no luggage space, daylight only.
Rental car
desks at T2/T3
TAA names Tanzania Rent a Car (tzrentacar.com) for the exclusive desks at the new terminals.

⚠️ The traps (walk past these)

The TZS 80,000 opening ask

With no meter and no published tariff, the rank's first price is a test: 2026 guides log opening asks of TZS 80,000–100,000 to the centre; fair is 40,000–70,000.

Do this: walk to the marked green-ribbon rank, or name the app quote first
T3 arrivals, T2 onward flights

All international arrivals use Terminal 3 (since 2019); domestic and Zanzibar onward flights leave from Terminal 2, a separate building; T1 needs a car ~1 km on.

Do this: check your onward terminal before committing to a long city ride
The 'cheap airport bus' from old guides

DART BRT has no airport service yet — Phase 3 is ~50% built (2025) and its JNIA terminal works run to April 2027. Today's 'bus' is a hot walk to Nyerere Road.

Do this: treat 'bus from the airport' as a roadside dala-dala stop, not a station
The ferry tout selling 'Dar Express' tickets

Street resellers ('papasi') sell the same Azam seat for US$80–126 against US$35 direct; missed boats are never refunded. 'Dar Express ferry' guides are stale — it's Azam Marine and Zan Fast Ferries from Sokoine Drive now.

Do this: buy on azammarine.com or at the terminal window — never from anyone who approaches you
After 22:00 the app dries up

Driver supply is thin: 10–20 min waits are normal, night/rain worsens it — rank drivers quote up to double daytime to no-app arrivals.

Do this: landing late? book a fixed-price transfer before takeoff
