The answer
The Metro Red Line — 5–7.50 AED, about 25 minutes to Downtown/Burj Khalifa. Stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 only. Clean, air-conditioned, and faster than any car at rush hour.
Buy a Nol Silver card (25 AED, includes 19 AED credit) at the station — minimum balance 7.50 AED to ride, daily cap ~14 AED.
Landing late or staying off the metro line? The cream RTA taxis at the rank are metered, honest, and 24/7 — 25 AED airport flagfall, 50–70 AED to Downtown.
⚠️ The traps (walk past these)
The unofficial "taxi" inside arrivals
Men approaching you inside the terminal offering rides are unlicensed — quotes of 200–300 AED for a 60 AED trip are standard. Licensed RTA taxis never tout inside.
Do this: follow the "Taxi" signs to the official rank outside. Cream cars, roof light, meter on.
The T2 metro assumption
Terminal 2 has no metro station — travelers follow old blog advice and wander hunting for one. There isn't one.
Do this: landed at T2? Metered taxi, or an airport bus toward the Red Line. Don't burn an hour looking.
The Red ticket vs Silver card tax
The paper "Red" Nol ticket costs 2 AED on issue and charges a higher per-trip fare than the Silver card. Fine for a single trip; a rip-off if you ride all week.
Do this: staying more than a day? Get the Silver card (25 AED with 19 AED credit) and tap.
The midnight metro cutoff
The metro stops around midnight (01:00 Fri). Arrive at 00:30 and it's taxis only — and that's exactly when queues form.
Do this: check the last-train time for your arrival day. Late landing → straight to the RTA rank or Careem.
