Gatwick Airport (LGW)

The answer
Skip the Gatwick Express. A regular Southern or Thameslink train is £12–17 (super off-peak from £9.50) and reaches Victoria or London Bridge in 30–40 min — the "Express" saves about 5 minutes for double the money.
The station is at the South Terminal. North Terminal? Free 2-minute shuttle, then the same trains.
Tight budget, no rush? National Express coach — £8–15, 90–120 min to Victoria Coach Station.

⚠️ The traps (walk past these)

The "fastest train to London" pitch

Gatwick Express branding is everywhere — but Southern trains to the same station cost half as much and take 35–40 min instead of 30. At Victoria the Express uses platforms 13/14 and Southern 15–19: tap in at the wrong gateline with the wrong ticket and you're charged the premium fare.

Do this: buy a Southern/Thameslink ticket or just tap contactless — the barrier charges the right fare for the train you actually take.
The wrong terminal shuttle scramble

The rail station is at the South Terminal only. Land at North and you'll follow "Trains" signs straight into confusion if you miss the free inter-terminal shuttle (every few minutes, 2 min ride).

Do this: from North Terminal, follow "South Terminal / Trains" — the shuttle is free and signed.
The late-night Uber surge

After the last trains (~00:30), Uber quotes jump to £120–160 for a trip that's £70–80 by day. Desperate arrivals pay it every night.

Do this: the N-network night buses and 24/7 National Express cover most of the gap — or wait 30 min for the surge to pass.
Oyster zone confusion

Gatwick is outside the London zones but inside the contactless area — a normal tap works fine. Tourists queue for paper tickets (often pricier, and railcard discounts don't apply at the machine default).

Do this: tap the same card or phone at both ends. That's it.
