The answer
Take the AirTrain ($8.75) to Jamaica station, then the LIRR — about $13.75–15.75 total, 30–35 min to Penn Station or Grand Central. Fastest, cheapest-on-rails, and it skips the traffic that eats taxis alive.
AirTrain is free between terminals — you only pay when exiting at Jamaica or Howard Beach.
Tight budget? AirTrain + E subway from Jamaica — ~$11.65 total, 50–60 min to Midtown.
⚠️ The traps (walk past these)
The arrivals-hall ride touts
"Need a ride? Taxi?" — anyone approaching you inside JFK arrivals is an unlicensed driver, and it's illegal for them to solicit. Tourists get quoted $120 cash for a ride worth $50, with the price "renegotiated" mid-highway.
Do this: yellow cab rank outside, or your app's marked pickup zone. Licensed drivers wait at the rank — they never come to you.
The "$70 flat fare" sticker shock
The $70 TLC flat fare to Manhattan is real — but it's the starting number. Surcharges, tolls, rush add-on and tip stack it to $90–115. Drivers aren't scamming you; the price just isn't $70.
Do this: budget $100 for a Midtown cab, or take AirTrain+LIRR and pocket the $85 difference.
The AirTrain exit surprise
AirTrain is free between terminals but costs $8.75 the moment you exit at Jamaica or Howard Beach. First-timers tap through confused, then realize the "free train" wasn't.
Do this: same contactless card or phone taps you out at Jamaica and into the LIRR or subway — nothing to pre-buy.
The wrong AirTrain branch
From the terminals, trains run to Jamaica (LIRR + E/J/Z subway — for Manhattan) and Howard Beach (A train — for Brooklyn/downtown). Board the wrong branch and you've added 40 minutes.
Do this: Manhattan = Jamaica. Check the platform sign before boarding.
