The Kuwaiti dinar is the world's highest-valued currency (1 KD ≈ US$3.25). Travellers who hear 'eight' and hand over a $50 note have effectively overpaid — and drivers who quote in 'dollars' without saying so are creating the confusion. The official zone fare of KD 8 to Kuwait City is about USD 26, and it is the legitimate price.
At KWI, Terminal 1 serves everyone EXCEPT the two locals: Kuwait Airways has its own Terminal 4 (its site calls it dedicated, opened 2018) and Jazeera Airways operates from Terminal 5. Taxi drivers, drop-off plans and the bus stop you walk to all differ by terminal — and the giant new Terminal 2 is mid-construction with a late-2026 target, reshuffling assignments.
The airport's own bus page caps operations at 04:30–23:45. A 01:00 arrival has no bus, and the cheapest legal way in is the fixed-zone taxi — a 30x 'sticker shock' versus the fare you read about, even though KD 8 is genuinely cheap for a capital.
Kuwait's airport publishes no ride-hailing pick-up zones and consistently-told local experience is that app cars are not allowed to pick up inside KWI, leaving stranded passengers refreshing a map of circling drivers. Guides written for Doha or Dubai paste the wrong pattern onto Kuwait.
