The answer
Walk out of arrivals and take the Renfe Cercanías C1 from the Aeropuerto station across the courtyard — €1.80, 8 minutes to María Zambrano and 12 to Málaga Centro-Alameda, roughly every 20 minutes.
The station sits under the terminal, the fare is a fifth of a taxi's, and it ignores the coast road entirely. It also runs the other way, so the same ticket takes you to Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola.
Tight budget? The EMT Line A express bus is €4.00 to Paseo del Parque — more than double the train, but useful when the 20-minute train gap hurts.
Three of you with bags? A taxi takes 15–20 minutes and the minimum fare from the airport is €17.37, so the meter lands somewhere between €17 and €30.
⚠️ The traps (walk past these)
The €1.40 city ticket that doesn't work on Line A
The airport bus is a separate product. EMT's ordinary single is €1.40, but the Line A airport ticket is €4.00 and is valid only on that line, with no transfer to any other bus. Board the Line A with a normal ticket loaded and it will not cover the ride.
Do this: buy the €4.00 airport ticket at the booth by the arrivals exit or on board, and buy a separate ticket if you are changing buses
The metro that doesn't exist at this airport
Metro de Málaga does not serve the airport — there is no metro station, and there never has been one. Plenty of transfer guides say 'metro to the airport' and mean the Cercanías C1, which is a completely different operator with a completely different ticket. Following a Metro sign will not get you there.
Do this: look for the Renfe Cercanías signs and the 'Aeropuerto' station, not the Metro
Tapping in but not out costs you the whole network
Renfe's contactless gates (Cronos) charge by zones crossed, but only if you validate at both ends. Forget to tap out at María Zambrano or Centro-Alameda and you are charged the full all-zone fare for the network — several times the €1.80 you were expecting.
Do this: tap the same card on the reader at your destination as well as at the airport
The taxi surcharge that runs the wrong way
Aena lists a €6.27 supplement on taxi services to the airport, and a night supplement of €2.15 between 00:00 and 06:00 — but the trip from the airport is governed by a minimum fare, €17.37 on Fare 4. Drivers who quote a flat €40 'airport rate' are not using the tariff on the sticker.
Do this: use the official rank outside arrivals, insist on the meter, and ask for a receipt
Nothing runs in the small hours
The C1 starts at about 06:44 and finishes at about 00:54, and the Line A bus stops around 23:50. A 3am arrival has no train and no bus at all — just the taxi rank and whatever the app quotes.
Do this: if you land between 01:00 and 06:00, pre-book a transfer rather than discovering the timetable at the kerb
