Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN)

The answer
A metered official taxi runs TND 10–20 to the centre in 15–30 min — provided the first words out of your mouth are compteur and the kerb 'flat 30' walkers get a polite no.
The regulated meter (flag ≈ 0.9 TND) undercuts the flat tourist quotes at the rank, and Tunisia's night tariff is the legal +50% after 21:00 — everything else is invention.
Tight budget? Transtu bus 35/635 outside arrivals to Tunis Marine ≈ 1 TND, 25–30 min, daytime only.
Coast hotels? The TGM railway from L'Aéroport station runs to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa for about 1 TND.

🚕 Every way out — real prices

Metered taxi (official ranks) BEST FOR MOST
≈ TND 10–20 to the centre (+50% after 21:00)
Licensed taxis queue at the kerb outside arrivals, 24/7. Insist on the meter from the start ('compteur'); 2026 guides note an airport-rank supplement (~4.5 TND) and ~1 TND per heavy bag ride on top of the meter. Cash in TND — cards are rare in cabs.
Transtu bus 35 / 635
≈ TND 0.5–1, exact cash
Stops just outside the arrivals exit and runs to the Tunis Marine bus terminal (beside the metro/light-rail hub, a short walk up Avenue Habib Bourguiba from the Medina gate) in 25–30 min, every ~15–30 min in daylight; 635 also serves Ariana. Daytime service — night landings need a cab. The Wassalni app shows live bus waits.
TGM coastal railway
≈ TND 1 paper ticket
L'Aéroport station on the TGM line sits a 10–20 min walk (or quick taxi) from the terminal gate and rides the coast to La Goulette (ferry port), Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa. Works closures happen — check the day's service before relying on it.
Yassir / inDrive
firm fare shown in-app (TND)
Bolt fully ceased operations on 9 May 2025 and Uber has never run here — Yassir (with in-app card payment) and inDrive are the working apps at TUN. Expect a wait for a car; the rank is often faster.
Pre-booked private transfer
fixed in EUR at booking
2026 guides price these in euros and steer them toward longer runs — Hammamet, Nabeul, Sousse — where negotiating a metered cab the whole way is not fun. For Hammamet on the cheap: taxi or bus to the Bab Alioua louage station, shared minibus onward ≈ 8 TND.

⚠️ The traps (walk past these)

Bolt quit Tunisia — the icon is a ghost

After a March 2025 crackdown (≈12 million dinars seized, Bolt struck from the business register) the app fully shut down on 9 May 2025 and now just says 'Bolt is not available here'. Travellers standing in arrivals waiting for a car will wait forever.

Do this: delete Bolt, install Yassir or inDrive before you fly
The 'flat 30 DT' at the arrivals kerb

Drivers at the door quote flat rates well above the legal meter — 30 TND for a run worth 10–20. The classic counter-move from Tunis guides: the same yellow cabs on the departures level, heading into town empty, accept 10–15 TND.

Do this: say 'compteur', walk past flat quoters — and take the stairs up to departures to save half
The dinar can't travel with you

TND is a closed currency — legally neither importable nor exportable. You cannot get it before landing, and leftover notes must be reconverted at airport counters with your exchange receipt.

Do this: withdraw or exchange in the arrivals hall, keep every receipt, spend down or reconvert before boarding
The meter that runs too fast

Travellers report doctored meters — one driver had his rigged to tick TND 1 per minute. Rule of thumb from the taxi watchdog guides: if the fare is already above 2 TND by the end of the airport road, the reading is fake.

Do this: watch the start (≈0.9 TND) — ask to be let out early on a suspicious ride
